Chess is one of the world’s oldest games. The modern form of chess has been around since at least 600 CE, with pieces found in Central Asia, India, Russia, China and elsewhere.

To this day, chess remains quite popular. According to a United Nations report, there are 605 million regular chess players in the world. Some estimates put it at 1 billion chess players. There are also 77+ million registered users on Chess.com, according to their Wikipedia article.

Chess has become part of the rapidly growing esports industry too, a market that passed $1 billion in 2021 and will reach $3.6 billion by 2027. The 2021 FIDE World Championship in Dubai was one of the most-watched streaming events ever, with 12.6 million hours watched and a record 613,000 concurrent viewers as Magnus Carlsen won the championship.

As part of the fast-expanding $300 billion gaming industry, and with incredible success already in live streaming events, chess will continue to be one of the world’s most played games. There has been a good flow of young talent to the space as well. In late 2021, a 16-year-old prodigy from India, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa (Pragg), shocked the world by defeating world champ Magnus Carlsen.

However, despite all these successes, chess has some hurdles to cross.

  • Decreasing popularity in some markets

  • Loss of interest from kids as they grow up

  • Only the top players can earn money

  • 3rd parties, like Twitch, take the lion’s share of profits

  • Lack of new technological features to invigorate the space

  • AI technology is turning some human players away from game

  • Nothing to merge the online and offline chess worlds

At Radical Chess, we see the continued popularity of chess, as well as the current challenges, and have come up with a next-generation platform to lead the game to a successful 21st century: Fuse chess with blockchain and metaverse technology.

Radical Chess is a 2D and 3D futuristic play-to-earn (P2E) chess game like no other. It takes the game of chess to the next level with unique and exciting gameplay. The 3D version is called Radical Chess Humanoid. This game features human characters as the chess pieces. They all have unique attributes and skills. The 2D version is the classic chess game like most chess platforms out there but we have very competitive leaderboards that would encourage and incentivize active users on the platform. On the Radical Chess platform, you can own NFTs to use in games, which is a unique way of digitizing chess pieces and collectibles. The platform also has play-to-earn (P2E) models that make it worth players’ time.

As the first metaverse platform for chess, Radical Chess is offering an exciting way to captivate attention, earn money, and utilize new technology. We’re bringing the metaverse revolution to the chess space — while staying true to traditional chess.
